Fact File - Sun Glasses

  • As well as protecting the eyes from harmful UV rays, sunglasses often give clues about the wearer’s personality. The wearer can look serious, sporty, fun loving or old fashioned depending on the style they choose.

  • Sunglasses are very much a fashion item, changing from season to season.  Some people even wear them indoors and at night.

LESSON PLAN: Sensational Shades

  • Sunglasses come in all shapes and sizes. Ask your students to create their own oversized 'Sensational Shades' and decorate them 'Dame Edna Style' using Faber-Castell Classic Glitter Glue.
  • Pre-prepare pieces of black paper (135gsm or more), 18cm x 6cm – 1 each (frames), 16cm x 3cm – 2 each (side arms).  Ask students to fold the larger 'frame' piece in half and then design their shades using a 2B Goldfaber or Grip Pencil.

Some points to discuss at this stage;

  1. Consider how comfortable the shades will be, e.g. a comfortable ‘bridge’ to sit on the nose, no pointy bits to dig into your cheeks
  2.  What shape and size will the lenses be? How would square lenses look in round frames? Cutting out.
  • It’s much easier to cut the lenses first (fold glasses again slightly to make initial cut, then follow outline.) Then cut out the frames being careful to leave a generous ‘bridge’ over the nose (this is the folded edge)
  • Unfold the frames and turn over to decorate ‘clean’ side.  Depending on the age group of students, draw patterns and designs on the frame in pencil, or work directly onto frames with Glitter Glue.
  • Demonstrate and discuss the tips and techniques shown.  It’s best to work flat with glitter glues, so gather students around a desk or central table. When complete allow frames to dry overnight.
  • Attach trimmed arm pieces and assemble 'shades'. Pair or group students to discuss what impression the 'Sensational Shades' gives them of the wearer.

Student Outcomes:

  • Were the students able to follow the instructions and design their own sensational shades.

  • Did the student complete the cutting part of the project with appropriate skill.

  • Did the student utilize one or more of the techniques demonstrated for effective use of the glitter glue media.

  • Was the student able to contribute to the discussion pair or group while wearing the ‘shades’?

TIPS & TECHNIQUES

  • Store Glitter Glue tubes on their lids, or in plastic cups while using.  This helps avoid air bubbles and makes application easier.
  • Hold the tubes in a normal 'pen' grip for greater accuracy.
  • To colour a solid area, draw the outline first, then apply to the middle space and smooth out using the nozzle.
  • For line work, try to draw away from, rather than into, the line.
  • You can add sequins or small beads simply by pressing them on to the wet Glitter Glue.
  • Faber-Castell Glitter Glue is designed to last! Replace lids after use to keep nibs clean. Store on their lids so you can use every last drop in the tube!

  •  How long?  One pack of Glitter Glue makes at least 12 Sensational Shades !
